Benefits and Uses of Orange Essential Oil
Orange essential oil reminds me of running around at my grandparents home in Florida. There was an orange grove that surrounded the back part of their property and tangerine trees next door. Citrus was literally everywhere! Orange essential oil truly reminds me of my childhood and the summers I spent in Florida. It's one of the reasons I always stock up on this household favorite!
A Little History
Before I dove into the world of aromatherapy and essential oils, I had no idea how many type of citrus oils actually existed. Since we are talking specifically about orange I thought I would point out there is more than one kind. There is sweet orange and blood orange. They have the same botanical name - Citrus sinensis. There is also bitter orange, which is also knows as Citrus aurantium.
The bitter orange typically comes from China and the sweet orange originated in India. Today these oils could come from a variety of destinations around the world such as Brazil, China, United States, Italy, Span, Israel and Argentina.
There’s nothing sweeter than the scent of a freshly peeled orange and that’s where essential orange oil comes from – the peel or the rind. The oil is extracted through cold-pressed or steam distillation methods. Overall, orange essential oil provides a myriad of benefits for the body, mind, and soul, making it a key ingredient in my sacred summer essential oil blend.

My favorite ways to use Orange Oil
There’s no denying the therapeutic properties of Orange Essential oil. The scent of it instantly lifts my mood and when I’m looking for a quick, midday pick-me-up I often add it to my essential oil diffuser or sniff it straight from the bottle. I also add a few drops to a cotton ball and put it in my trash as a natural deodorant!
Note of caution: Citrus oils may have a level of photo-toxicity. Basically, if you put a lots on your skin then go out in the sun it could potentially sunburn your skin from the exposure. If you have sensitive skin wait until you know you are going to be inside for a while before putting it on topically if you so choose.
Always remember to do a patch test if this is a new oil for you. Test a small portion of your skin that's out of sight to see if there are any reactions. Often with any new oil, I would recommending diluting it in a carrier oil. Some of my favorite carrier oils are almond, argon, coconut and jojoba.
There are so many uses and health benefits. I do believe organic and wild harvest ingredients are best for any essential oil or blend. I have my personal opinions and trusted sources; however, I do believe everyone needs to follow their own intuition in terms of what brand and oil is best for them. No company is 100% anything because nothing on this earth is 100% perfect especially if it has a human element to it. With advances in technology and greater access to oils, no one company is the end all - be all when it comes to essential oils. I personally have tested many brands and I go with my gut, intuition and research.
